Oh Presea-chan, heres something about some of the Fruits Basket characters that you may like to know (there not in character order)
If you want spoilers, you should read it all (sorry but its very long but SOOOOO cool to read):
Tohru Honda-kun:Tohru has helped many of the Sohmas, most notably Kisa Sohma, helping her regain her confidence and voice, and Kyo Sohma, staying by his side even when he attempted to push her away by physically harming her. Later in the manga, Tohru and Kyo fall in love with each other, but when she confesses her feelings to him, consumed by guilt over Kyoko's death, Kyo tells her it's a delusion and runs off.
Tohru goes to follow him, but is confronted by Akito, who has heard the whole thing, and tries to stab Tohru. Akito stops however, when Tohru tells him how she now knows how it feels to be left behind, causing Akito to flash back to the previous banquet, where he was all alone, even though everyone was there. Tohru wants to start anew with Akito, since the way they met was so poorly done. After a bit more encouragement, Akito extends his hand to Tohru, just as the ground beneath Tohru crumbles, causing Tohru to fall. Fortunately, Akito starts screaming for help, which brings Shigure and Yuki running. They bring Tohru back to the house and call an ambulance. Kyo also comes back. He starts crying and asking her not to die. For a moment she regains consciousness. She tells him that she's alright, but it sounds almost like she's saying goodbye. He tells her to stop talking and that he understands. Then, he gives Tohru what's probably her first kiss.
Luckily, Tohru appears to have survived the fall, and is currently recovering in the hospital, waiting for Kyo, who had been distancing himself from her, to come visit her.
Yuki Sohma-kun: Originally, Yuki didn't hate Kyo; he actually wanted to be friends with him. But Kyo refused, as he hated Yuki, the rat, for inherently being superior to the cat. The conversation first started when Kyo dropped his red hat. Yuki picked it up and offered it to him, but Kyo turned the hat down, disgusted that the rat would touch his things.
The hat ended up the hands of Tohru, who had gotten lost as a child. Yuki (whom Tohru did not recall nor recognize when they met again as teenagers) found her and led her home, giving her Kyo's hat.
It has only very recently been revealed that Kyo never hated Yuki for who he was, but had been so miserable with his life that he felt he needed a scapegoat for all his misfortune. Kyo felt it would only be logical for the cat to blame the rat and began to hate Yuki for this reason alone.
Their relationship has become more overtly complex since this revelation. Kyo has always felt Yuki was more fortunate and always able to take advantage of a situation like one should, thus Kyo's dislike of Yuki stemmed from envy. However, Yuki reveals to Kyo that he is jealous of Kyo, because despite all of Kyo's bad luck and misfortunes, he is not passive like Yuki (something Yuki despises of himself) and able to vocally express his own emotions and thoughts regardless of what they are and also bring happiness to Tohru, something Yuki knows that he will never be able to do in the same way.
Kyo Sohma-kun:
It has been shown that Kyo did in fact know Kyoko Honda before she had died. He did not know Tohru, however, he had made a promise to Kyoko to keep Tohru safe, "a man's promise". There is much unknown about their relationship, but Kyo looked up to Kyoko as a mother he lost.
Kyo did not feel comfortable going straight home to Kazuma's house when he was young, and instead wandered around a bit before doing so. One day, Kyoko stumbled upon Kyo sitting down near her workplace. The two continued to meet and talk until the day Tohru disappeared. Kyo, seeing Kyoko in despair, promised to bring back Tohru and protect her from harm. Though Kyo tried his best to find her, Yuki Sohma was the one to rescue Tohru. After hearing this, he attempted to inform Kyoko that Yuki was a rotten person. When Kyoko disagrees, he insists that even she is taking the rat's side now. Angry and embarrassed, young Kyo ceased to visit her.
The next time Kyo saw Kyoko is the day of the accident. As he wondered whether he should greet Kyoko, he noticed a car going at high speed right toward her. Kyo could have saved her by pulling her out of the way, into his arms, but would have revealed the curse. He put the curse and Kyoko's life on the line and chose himself. This explains why Kyo feels so guilty about her death. Later, it is revealed that the reason Kyo was out that day was because he wanted to meet Tohru. When Kyoko was lying on the ground covered in blood, he swears that he heard her say "I won't forgive you". Kyo, in anguish, fled. His foster father, Kazuma, seeing Kyo in such a distraught state, took Kyo in the mountains for four months of 'training'. Kazuma actually took Kyo to the mountains to keep him alive.
Upon his return, he was sent to Akito Sohma, the head of the Sohma family. Akito's taunting caused him to lose his temper and screamed that he would beat Yuki. Akito then proposed a bet. If Kyo could beat Yuki by the time he graduated, he could join the Zodiac and Akito would stop calling him a monster. Naturally, Kyo was excited. The reason for his excitement, however, wasn't that he had the chance to join the Zodiac. It was because now he had yet another reason to hate Yuki. After leaving, he immediately went to Shigure's house where Yuki was living. Crashing through the roof, he challenged Yuki.
Suddenly, a girl came up from behind and fell on him, causing him to transform. After changing back, Shigure told Kyo the girl's name. He was angry enough that an outsider had learned of the curse, but the part that bothered him the most was that the girl was the daughter of Kyoko!
The first time Kyo meets Tohru, Tohru finds out the Sohma family secret. At first, it seems that Kyo truly dislikes (But he seeems to dislike almost everyone.) Tohru but after a while, he like Yuki, seems to be 'drawn' to her kind heart and gentle demeanor. Gradually, after spending time with her, it is obvious that Kyo falls in love with her. Tohru later accepts Kyo in his "original form" and their relationship begins .
In chapter 121, Akito tried to stab Tohru for 'stealing' the Zodiac members away. However, Tohru told Akito that she doesn't have to be lonely and that they can be friends. Just as Akito was about to extend her hand and accept Tohru as her "friend", the ground broke and Tohru fell, hurting herself (possibly fatally). Akito screamed for help, bringing Yuki and Shigure to Tohru's rescue. They took her home when Kyo showed up. He started crying and begging her not to die. Tohru, for a moment, is conscious, and says she's all right.
As of chapter 123, Kyo was distancing himself from Tohru out of guilt, but after having a conversation with Yuki, he went to the hospital to go see her. Unfortunately visiting hours are over and even if there was still time to visit, Tohru would have only been able to see family members.
(sorry that it was really long)
Kyoko Honda-kun:
When she was young, Kyoko caused trouble, cutting classes and was disowned by her parents. She was also the leader of an all-female gang/suicide squad called 'The Red Butterfly (Suicide Squad)', the name originating from the legend of how the tail lights on her bicycle trailed like a bright red butterfly when she rode at night. However, Kyoko later moved on and got a job.
She fell in love with student teacher Katsuya Honda which contributed to her leaving her gang. They shortly married and had a daughter? Tohru. Katsuya became a positive influence in her life, and they worked through difficulties in a joint effort. When he died from illness, however, Kyoko descended into depression, neglected Tohru, and almost committed suicide. Eventually though, Kyoko came to her senses and vowed to never again disregard Tohru for whatever reason. She raised Tohru by herself, not to mention the care she offered Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima, Tohru's best friends.
Sometime in the story, Kyoko met Kyo Sohma when he was young and mentioned a word about 'a man's promise', asking him to look after Tohru. This could explain Kyo and Tohru's growing bond. Over the years Kyo remained friends with Kyoko. He was even there when the car hit her. Though he saw the car coming, and had the chance to save her, doing so would cause him to embrace her. It was either his secret or Kyoko's life. Kyo swears that he heard her say "I'll never forgive you," something that still haunts him to this day
Near the initiation of the series, when Kyoko's past had not yet been revealed, she died in a car accident one May morning, and her daughter Tohru went to live with her grandfather (Katsuya's father), and later, Shigure Sohma's house. Tohru holds Kyoko as the most important person in her life and always carries a photograph of her. At times, she talks to her mother in her mind, recounting the day's experiences or simply basking the memories they shared. Later, it is revealed that on the day of the accident, Kyo (whom she had met years ago) was standing nearby and spotted the car. He was about to pull her away, but that would involve embracing her, which would turn him into a cat in front of many people. So he did nothing, and Kyoko was hit. The driver of the car (who was Mannve's girl friend's father) died instantly and Kyoko died later at the hospital. Seeing her lying on the ground covered in blood, Kyo swears he heard her say "I won't forgive you."
Akito Sohma-san:List of injuries caused by Akito:
Isuzu Sohma: Pushed her out a window for her relationship with Hatsuharu Sohma, hospitalizing her. Later in the manga, Akito locks her up in the room intended for those cursed with the Cat spirit, and chops off her hair.
Kisa Sohma: Slapped her across the face, causing her to be slammed her into a wall (anime); attacked her, giving her injuries that caused her to be hospitalized for two weeks (manga) when Hiro Sohma professed his love for her.
Yuki Sohma: Often abused when he was young (emotionally, mentally, and physically). Akito hit him with a clay pitcher or vase at a New Years banquet because Yuki was being disrespectful.
Hatori Sohma: Threw a vase at him, nearly blinding Hatori in the left eye when he asked to marry his second cousin Kana.
Kyo Sohma: Threw a bell at him, hitting him in the cheek when he came to visit the Sohma summer home, and slapped him. Akito has also been particularly cruel with her use of psychological torture.
Momiji Sohma: Punched him in the jaw when he tried to stop him from going to see Tohru (chapter 64).
Tohru Honda: Scratched her on her cheek, causing her to bleed when she tried to stop Akito from hurting Momiji further (chapter 65); slashes her arm with a knife and slaps her (chapter 121); pulls her off the ground by her hair and repeatedly tugs on it until warded off by Yuki and Shigure (anime).
Kureno Sohma: Slapped him (chapter 98); stabbed in lower back, though it's later revealed that he is all right (chapter 118, 122).
Ren Sohma (Akita-san mother): Attempted to strangle her, but Hatori pulled Akito back (chapter 98).
As the anime cover only 45 chapters of the manga (loosely in parts), there are several differences in the character of Akito in both.
It has never been confirmed in the manga that Akito will die at 25 years old. In the manga, Hatori Sohma (Akito's doctor) reveals that most of Akito's illnesses are psychological, though her father, Akira Sohma, was also quite sickly, and died at a young age. Also, in the anime Akito is the "core" of the curse; however, in volume 11 of the manga, it is revealed that Akito is actually the zodiac god.
In that same line, it has never been confirmed in the manga that Akito holds bitterness against the entire Sohma family because of her role in the curse. Akira Sohma told a very young Akito that, once he died, the cursed Sohmas would love her forever to make up for the lack of affection from Ren. This casts a new light on the Akito's behavior and her claim that, sooner or later, all the Juunishi will come back to her.
In chapter 97 (volume 17) of the manga, it is revealed that Akito is actually female, but was raised to act and appear as a male. The decision to raise Akito male was her mother Ren's; and though the reason is currently unknown, it is largely assumed that Akito was raised male because the head of the family could not be female, and/or because of Ren's jealousy of her late husband's great affection for their daughter.
In chapter 101 of the manga, Shigure Sohma's editor, upon glimpsing Akito from afar, comments on how young the head of the Sohma family seems. Shigure replies, "Young? But he's got to be past 20 years old now."
Shigure Sohma-san: Shigure is laid-back and anything but solemn. He is somewhat a pervert, and as a writer of both romance novels and academic books, Shigure loves to drive his editor insane.
Shigure's best friends are Hatori Sohma and Ayame Sohma. This trio has been friends since their childhood. Together their nickname is the Mabudachi Trio. While Ayame and Shigure get along very well, it's less certain how Hatori, who is always exasperated with them, became their friend.
But Shigure has another side to himself. He is actually quite cunning, scheming, and thoughtful. It is speculated that Shigure is actually using Tohru Honda to break the Sohma curse.
Shigure has been noted for having romantic relationships with both Akito Sohma and Mayuko Shiraki as well as having an affair with Akito's mother Ren Sohma.
Kagura Sohma-kun:Since she and Kyo Sohma are both part of the zodiac, and they can hug without transforming, Kagura believed they are meant for each other. She can be outrageous and impulsive with her actions, so she initially is very audacious with her declarations of love for Kyo. However, Rin Sohma questions what Kagura calls "love" for Kyo and Kagura later realizes that perhaps that her feelings in the beginning were more so out of pity than true love. When she was little, Kagura began playing with Kyo because she was relieved that there was someone who was less fortunate than her. On the day when Kagura took Kyo's beads away and first dicovered Kyo's "true form", she ran away from fright. She realizes now how she must have hurt Kyo's feelings very badly. She reveals to Kyo that the reason why she "loved" him was because she wanted to feel better about herself and believed she could wash away the selfishness by loving him. Kagura ends up apologizing for being so selfish.
Oddly enough, Kagura is one of the few members of the Jyunishi who has never been hurt by Akito directly or indirectly (Ayame Sohma and Ritsu Sohma appear to be the only other ones). It is especially unusual because of Akito's tendencies to hurt the female members of the Jyunishi (ie. Rin and Kisa Sohma).
Kisa Sohma-kun:One of three girls afflicted by the Sohma family curse, Kisa is able to hug or be hugged by the opposite gender if they are also under the curse. Before Tohru came to be involved with the members of the Sohma family, there were two main people in Kisa's life. Kisa is most often seen with Hiro Sohma, representing the ram of the zodiac. Hiro loved Kisa, but made the mistake of telling Akito Sohma. Akito ended up beating Kisa, inflicting wounds that took almost two full weeks to heal. As a result, Hiro, not wanting anymore to be the cause of her pain, distanced himself from Kisa just as Kisa's school torment initiated. After Tohru won over Kisa's heart and loyalties, Hiro became extremely jealous. Kisa, loving them both, was confused by his behavior but still believed in him. Though it is not overly pronounced in either the series or manga, Kisa is also close to Hatsuharu Sohma (Haru). They have a very close brother-sister relationship. When Kisa finally ran away from home, it was Haru, along with her mother, who searched for her. Yuki Sohma also feels a connection with Kisa, as Yuki, like Kisa, went through a stage when he refused to speak, a result of Akito's actions.
Hiro Sohma-kun::
In volume 10, Hiro gets a call from his mother, who tells him she's pregnant. Because his mother, Satsuki, tends to be absentminded and rather ditzy, he demands to know if it happens to be one of her famous misunderstandings. However, what she is saying is true and when all Tohru, Kisa, and the other Jyunishi present find out, they decide to congratulate him because he will be a older brother soon. As they celebrate, it is also revealed that Hiro's sister or brother will not be cursed because all thirteen possible Jyuunishi are still alive and another member will not be born until another member of the zodiac dies. Hiro's sibling turns out to be a girl, whom they name Hinata. His mother jokingly remarks that Hiro is so helpful Hinata that she fears Hiro will develop a "sister complex" with her.
When Isuzu Sohma is pushed out the window by Akito, Hiro is the only witness and the only one other than Akito and Isuzu who know the truth behind the incident. Isuzu forces him to keep it a secret from everyone else because she does not want Hatsuharu Sohma, whom she loves, to become close to her and get hurt as well. When Isuzu disappears for several months, Hiro confesses before Hatsuharu and Kisa the truth in hopes that Hatsuharu can save Isuzu from Isuzu's self-destruction. The confession leads to an admission to Kisa that he angered Akito by telling Akito he cared about Kisa, which resulted in Kisa's own injuries. Both these incidents illustrate the amount of growth seen in Hiro's character, since he now has the courage to admit his feelings outloud rather than venting them through other means.
In chapter 118, he is also seen being freed from the curse, proven as he hugs his baby sister for the first time and receives a hug from his tearful mother without transforming. Reasons as to how or why this happened are as of yet unknown.
Hatori Sohma-kun:Hatori is the family doctor of the Sohma clan. When Akito Sohma decides that someone is to have his memory erased to protect the Sohma secret, Hatori is the one who executes Akito's order. He has erased the memories of Yuki Sohma's friends, Momiji Sohma's mother, and Kana, Akito?s second
Ayame Sohma-san:Ayame is one of the oldest cursed members of the Sohma clan. He and Yuki do not get along very well until Ayame asks Yuki if he can go to a parent-teacher conference in the place of their parents, wishing to make amends for all the times in Yuki's childhood when Ayame sold him out.
The fact that both Ayame and Yuki are members of the Jyunishi is quite unusual since it is very rare that any of the Jyunishi are siblings at any given time.
Ayame transforms into the snake of the Chinese Zodiac whenever he is hugged by the opposite gender, when his body comes under a great deal of stress, or when he gets too cold or too hot.
Ayame is also one of the few members of the Jyunishi who has never been hurt by Akito Sohma directly or indirectly (Kagura Sohma and Ritsu Sohma appear to be the only other ones).
Ayame is one of the members of the Mabudachi Trio, the three oldest members of the zodiac. The other two are Shigure Sohma and Hatori Sohma, who are also his best friends.
Ayame owns a men's cosplay shop (which he named after himself), specializing in "men's fantasies". To most people, the place is quite strange, as Ayame has gotten orders for some very strange things. Ayame and his assistant, Mine Kuramae (pronounced, "Mee-nay"),design and sew the clothing themselves. Mine often wears some of the clothing she makes. In the manga and anime, you see her in a maid's outfit. She likes to grab any particularly cute girls who come into the shop and make them try on clothes.
It is later revealed that Mine is Ayame's girlfriend and the seamstress of the store whearas Ayame designs the dresses, erotic as some or all of them may be
Hatsuharu Sohma-san:Haru has something of a split personality. His darker side, 'Black Haru', transforms the usually calm, placid Haru? 'White Haru'? into a raging individual who forgets his rash deeds afterward. His alter ego originated from teasing when he was young; adults accused the ox of being stupid for letting the rat ride on its back during the journey to the banquet of the Chinese Zodiac. Haru bitterly blamed Yuki Sohma, the rat in the Sohma clan, but Yuki helped him realize that Haru was not at fault for the ox's actions. Since then, Haru has claimed that Yuki was his first love. He went out of his way to protect Yuki from Akito Sohma, even making a deal with Shigure Sohma so Yuki would be able to live in his house.
Haru is very close to Kisa Sohma. When Kisa ran away from home as a result of classmates' teasing, he, along with Kisa's mother, were the only ones who made the effort to search for her.
Momiji Sohma-kun:Momiji was born into the richer families of the Sohma clan. His father, who is Japanese, owns a number of companies, one of which Momiji's friend Tohru works at as a janitor.
Although Momiji almost always appears to be care-free, he lives with a mournful past which he tries to keep secret. Immediantly after his birth, Momiji's mother learned of his curse and from then on rejected him and was eventually driven mad. She later requested to have her memories erased by Hatori Sohma so she could recover. When asked if she would regret the procedure, she responded by saying that the greatest regret she had was that "that creature", referring to Momiji, had come out of her body. Momiji, standing hidden just outside the room, overheard this and was, needless to say, extremely saddened. Momiji acknowledges his fate, vowing never to forget anyone who has affected his life.
Momiji now attends Kaibara high school with Tohru, Yuki Sohma, Kyo Sohma, and Hatsuharu Sohma. In his first year of high school, Momiji wore a girl's uniform (with short shorts), because he liked the way it looked on him.
In chapter 115 of the manga, Momiji is freed from the curse. Around this time, we see that he has grown up both emotionally and physically (the girls at school describe him as charming and "princely" when he finally decides to wear a boy's uniform, though the image is somewhat ruined when he asks Tohru if she wants to buy an ice cream cake to share with the others).
Momiji's mother, after having her memories of Momiji erased, and Momiji's father later had a daughter, Momo, who realizes that she and Momiji look similar. Momo wanted to take up violin, which prompted Momiji's father to ask Momiji, who took violin lessons at the time, to quit, since they'd have the same teacher. Unfortunately, the reason Momo wanted to take up violin in the first place was because she had seen Momiji playing the violin.
When Tohru came to the main house to talk to Kureno Sohma, Momo asked her to ask Momiji if he would be her older brother. When Tohru told him this, Momiji cried with happiness.
Momiji is one of the few characters in Fruits Basket that has not officialy been in an any sort of romantic relationship. It is, however, hinted that he may have romantic interest in Tohru Honda, as noted in some conversations Momiji has with Kyo.
Ritsu Sohma-san:Ritsu is an insecure character who dresses in women's clothing to conceal his feelings of inadequacy. He believes that because he sees himself as not particularly intelligent or physically powerful, he brings disgrace upon the Sohma family. He is constantly apologizing for his actions, even when he is not at fault. He can also be suicidal and has a certain spot on his side that makes him faint; Shigure Sohma takes advantage of it quite often.
Ritsu (or Ritchan-san as Tohru calls him) has a small (mostly fan-invented) relationship with Mitchan, Shigure's editor. Both are constantly stressed by Shigure's indifference to almost everything, and have a tendency to overreact.
Ritsu is also one of the few members of the Jyunishi who has never been hurt by Akito Sohma directly or indirectly (Kagura Sohma and Ayame Sohma appear to be the only other ones). This is both surprising and a blessing given that Ritsu tends to dress and act very feminine (a fact that Akito would not tolerate given that she despises the female members of the Zodiac, claiming them to be "stealing" the males away.). It is also a blessing given the fact that Ritsu lacks confidence.
Izusu Sohma-kun (Rin-san):When Rin was young, her parents were always affectionate and devoted to her. Rin thought this peculiar since parents of cursed Sohmas usually resented their children. Because of this, Rin decided to ask why they loved her so much; her seemingly harmless question somehow shattered their caring attitude; it had only been a fa?ade so that she would think she lived in a happy family. After that, they never treated Rin decently again and eventually abused her to the point where she had to be hospitalized. In that time, her parents told her that they didn't want her home again. This has been one of the reasons as to why Rin dislikes being in the hospital and often tries to sneak out before she has fully recovered.
Rin is a willful, proud woman. She despises the way the other members of the Sohma clan submit to Akito Sohma, and avoids him whenever possible. Although she isolates herself from others, Rin can occasionally be seen with Hiro Sohma, the only one besides Hatsuharu Sohma (Haru), Kagura Sohma, and Kagura's mother to visit Rin during her stays in the hospital as a child, as her parents did not wish to see her.
She goes to an all girls' private school, and resides at Kagura Sohma's house. She has recently graduated from high school, though she was not at the graduation ceremony (because she had been locked away by Akito). Rin suffers from stomach ulcers, and her eating habits are sparse, probably due to stress and trauma.
At one point, Akito's mother, Ren, tricks Rin into trying to steal a particular box from Akito's room. She is caught and forced into the cursed cat's room by Akito, who later chops her hair off. She is freed from her imprisonment by Kureno Sohma while Haru learns from Hiro that it was Akito who pushed Rin out a window and Rin's reasons for breaking up with him. Rin escapes from the hospital in a daze and is later found semi-conscious on the street by Haru. The two reconcile and he takes her to Kazuma Sohma's house, where she has since been staying while she recovers.
Kureno Sohma-kun:Akito Sohma keeps Kureno close and isolated from others, even from the other cursed members of the Sohma clan, dominating nearly every aspect of his life. Kureno is rarely permitted to leave the house. Of the Sohma clan, Kureno knows the least about the outside world.
Kureno's is the first to be freed from the curse, he was around 16 at the time (approx 10 years before Fruits Basket takes place). Akito begged him to stay by her side, Kureno, seeing Akito as a crying young girl agreed. Thus he stays with her despite her possessiveness and fear of losing him. Kureno is the one who revealed to Tohru that Akito was a woman. He also revealed that the person she thought was Akito the day she had visited him at the main house was, in fact, Akito's mother, Ren Sohma.
Kureno was also stabbed in the back by Akito. It was hinted that he died/was severely injured when Uo found a dead(?) bird at one of her part time jobs. After Akito confronts Tohru at Shigure's house, she confesses to Shigure that she stabbed Kureno. Shigure, hoping to clear things up, calls the main house to discover that Kureno is recovering at the hospital
His first visit to a convenience store was at the age of 26. Since he didn't know how to find a basket, he consequently dropped all of his items on the floor, sending Arisa Uotani, who worked at that store, into laughter, because she thought it was something Tohru Honda would do (In fact, that was Tohru had actually done when they first met in middle school). Later, they met again, and he bought her lunch, resulting in a meal in which they talked more than they ate. Arisa developed a crush on Kureno, constantly thinking of and talking about him, but she does not know he is a Sohma. She believes that his cold departure after lunch was because of their nine-year age difference, but in reality, Kureno feels it is for the better if he does not love her back due to the will of Akito, who does not wish for Kureno to associate himself with outsiders.
However, Tohru knows that Kureno belongs to the Sohma clan, and she secretly talked to him, telling him that Arisa wished to see him again. Kureno feels the same way, but he remains wholly loyal to Akito.
Akira Sohma-san (Akito-san's father):Akira Sohma was the late head of the Sohma clan, because of his poor health. A maid named Ren, who was attending to him while he lay sick in bed, saw how lonely he was, and how afraid he was of dying. The two soon fell in love, and Akira even defended Ren from a strict maid, who had scorned her and told her to leave the household. Soon, the two got married, and it wasn't long after that Ren became pregnant with Akito, their daughter-raised-male.
Akira was supposedly the most ecstatic over Akito's birth, because the little girl was possessed by the spirit of the Chinese zodiac's god, the Jade Emperor. Akira often told Akito when she was little how special she was, and that she was "born to be loved" (chapter 117) by the rest of the zodiac members.
While Akira may have been overjoyed with the birth of his first and only child, Ren was not, believing that Akito was stealing her husband's affections away, and that she was no longer the most important person in Akira's life. This troubled Akira greatly, who's wish was for Ren to be the happiest about Akito, believing that their daughter's godliness was proof that Ren and Akira's relationship was special.
When Akito was a young child, Akira's poor health finally caught up with him, and claimed his life. Before he died, he gave Akito an empty box (which a maid later told her contained her father's soul), stating that he would never truly leave her, even if Akito couldn't physically see him.
Moments after the late head's death, Ren burst into the room, distressed that his departure had been so sudden that no one had had time to come and fetch her, fueling her anger towards her daughter.
Ren later claims that the bond between Akito and the zodiac animals is not the "real thing" (even though Akira seemed to believe so), but that Ren and Akira's relationship was indeed the "real thing" (Chapter 98).
Arisa Uitani-san:Kyoko Honda, Tohru's mother, helped Arisa Uotani give up life as a member of an all-girl gang. (Kyoko was an ex-gang member herself) Since then, she? affectionally called Uo-chan by her friends (see Japanese honorifics)? has been very protective of Tohru, and grateful for her mother's influence. Her rough exterior is a misleading first impression, for close friends know her true generous spirit. In school, Kyo Sohma is her adversary, and they bicker often. In the later books, she falls in love with Kureno Sohma, not knowing he is related to her rival. The Prince Yuki Fangirls find her scary and violent, and generally stay away from her.
Arisa's mother eloped with another man when Arisa was in first grade, causing her father to turn alcoholic after his wife left. Kyoko and Tohru helped Arisa heal emotionally, and with assistance, Arisa's father is working on leaving his alcoholism and becomes a responsible parent. The pair lives in a unit with one bedroom and one living room. Both she and her father have jobs, his of unknown origins, hers at a coffee shop and convenience store. It is in the convenience store that she meets Kureno Sohma.
Saki Hanjima-san: In regards to Saki Hanajima's family, she has a brother, a grandmother, and two parents. Her brother is Megumi Hanajima, who is around 13 years of age. Megumi is a quiet boy, with the power to cast curses. When Saki was having difficulty with classmates at school, her family encouraged her to keep going. After an incident in middle school, the family decided to move, and at her new school, Saki met Tohru Honda and Arisa Uotani.
When Saki was younger, the first discoveries of her power frightened her. A boy, one of her classmates, taunted her, called her a witch, and forced her to devour a live newt. In outrage, Saki struck out at the boy, nearly killing him. Realizing what she could do with her power, she became wary. She knew that she had a great ability, with the power to harm people. From then on, she decided to remind herself of how dangerous she was. She began ignoring people and dressing in a gothic manner, not to frighten others for vanity, but to scare them away, and to remind herself of her threat.
Megumi, not wanting his sister to be the only "weird one" in the family, studied the art of curses until he finally mastered it. He joined Saki in her predicament so that she would not be alone in her sufferings.
Arisa and Saki vowed upon the grave of Tohru's mother Kyoko Honda that they would always be there to protect Tohru. Therefore, Hana always stands up for Tohru, and Arisa and Saki were the first to 'inspect' Shigure Sohma's home when Tohru began living there to make sure she was comfortable and well-cared for.
It is later found out that the boy Saki almost killed was in fact Kakeru (the Vice President and friend of Yuki).
