I think that I remember you posted something similar to this some time ago Simmiess. PETA has always seemed to me like a scary pseudo terrorist organization somewhere between Greenpeace and Al Qaida, so it doesn't surprise me that they would bomb or attack a research facility. The fact that they kill animals doesn't surprise me either, after all death is a form of liberation too, right? My own opinion on the matter can be derived from the Book of Genesis where (without quoting chapter and verse) God gives humans dominion over all of the animal beasts of the Earth. Which means simply that we can use any creature as we see fit provided we do so with responsibility by seeing to the needs of animals and not subjecting them to unnecessary suffering.

Oh my goodness! What would we do without our friends?

I hear that.  One of the worst was on this other board someone put up this one news article.  A few people posted before me knee jerking to the impression it was designed to give.  I expressed skepticism, and ultimately ended up being almost dead on in my prediction of what was actually going on, when someone else dug up the actual law it was talking about.  They wanted my head on a platter for merely that, the posts themselves were about as civil as humanly possible.  People like to hang on to their initial impressions, all evidence to the contrary.

You guys should try working at a big city animal care & control facility for a while.  It's like Auschwitz for pets.  Makes that PETA stuff look humane.

The place where we got our kitties from wasn't too bad, but it's a really small one so I can imagine that the facilities in big cities like New York are probably pretty much what you describe MR although I've never seen one myself. I'm not sure it's worse to not have animal control either. Just letting stray animals roam free does let nature take care of the problem, but the animals would die slow deaths of starvation in big cities. Of course the root of the issue is humans, people that do not take responsibility for their pets.

I was a Supervisor for the Dept. of Animal Care & Control in Chicago for a summer.  It was absolutely horrifying.  While the problem absolutely starts with the pets owners, it only gets worse once they arrive at the city "shelter".  It is horribly understaffed & underfunded.  Animals wallow in their own feces and are starved for days on end simply because there is not enough employees to go around.  Plus, literally dozens of perfectly healthy animals are put to death daily because there is no manpower or money to even make the attempt to put them up for adoption.  Meanwhile the mayor of this city and his cronies continue to get richer & fatter at the expense of all (even the animals of the city).  I quit after three months of going home every night with my skin crawling and the images of dead & dying animals burned into my retinas.

Simple point to the story:  For the love of God please get your animals fixed.

Uggh, I don't blame you for quitting MR, it must have been like the Vietnam war working there every day. *Hugs* Certainly your awareness was raised and a few people like myself and others here that read about your experiences, but what is really needed is the raising of awareness on a massive universal scale. There has to be a way to document things like this so that the general public in Chicago (and elsewhere) knows what is really going on, and then maybe there will be enough political pressure put on city hall to do something about it.

People who work there have tried to go public with the deplorable conditions.  A few have even succeeded in getting photos out.  However, when they send them to places like PETA- nobody listens (for obvious reasons).  Most people who work there need the job too bad (a city job in Chicago is like a wet dream you never wake up from as far as pay & benefits go) to risk losing it.  Not to mention all the other bad things that could happen to you if you piss off city hall (can you say 400 parking tickets in a month?).

Meh, well that's all politics as usual I'm afraid ... yet another product of a morally bankrupt society. >_<

But that's another topic, so let's not steer this off the track. Unfortunately the animals get caught in the middle of the whole thing and have no choice in what happens to them. Like you said above MR, prevention seems like the only solution. The place we got our kitties from (Humane Society) automatically fixes all the animals that they acquire. So the sterilization is provided free of charge to people wanting to adopt pets. This should be mandatory for all sources of pets (pets stores breeders, etc) so that no one can acquire animals capable of reproduction. Exceptions would be for those that have licenses to breed, and maybe such people should be required to register animal births the way human births are. That might be going a little too far, but ... well you've seen the results of not doing such things. v_v

Very sensible indeed.  Unfortunately we can't even stop stoopid people from breeding let alone make them stop breeding their pets.   ;D
