Moshman’s Fanfiction Critique
« on: January 20, 2006, 04:46:40 PM »
I have spent a lot of time writting a fanfiction critique over at TMFFA, as I am horrified with the amount of dipshits that are on the site. I am perticulary vexed by the number of MSTs, people are writting, which is quite indeed vomit inducing. Not all of my segments will be rants, I will be writing a character guide next. Almost all the stories have the characters acting out of character, (i.e. sex with Ryo-ohki, and fetishes, and, uh, yeah, complete bullshit) I may sound like a complete asshole in my MST rant, but I just can't stand there and watch untalent piss all over people's talent. I mean, really the said story may be bad, but at least the author created it themselves, and didn't cut and paste someone else's work in MS Word, and shit all over it. I am trying to wake people up and realize that anyone that can wipe their ass, can write an MST, and there is no talent in an MST. I have also expanded on my theory of writer's block. You can find the critque here:

<3 your MST rant. I totally stopped reading fanfics altogether at one point because of the amount of sucky MSTs around

It's rare that I'll read fanfiction because I just don't have time for it unfortunately. I used to watch the MST TV show, so I think I understand the concept of what's going on well enough. I suppose that if someone puts enough effort into making a parody of someone else's work and is plainly obvious about it, well okay everyone is allowed to have fun once in a while. However, just hacking up someone else's work only to get laughs without supplying any original input is simply mutilation, not unlike what was done to the Cardcaptor Sakura anime series. The people that run sites like TMMFA need to be a little more attentive to things like bad MST's. I understand that censorship is a bad thing, but so is plagiarism and the line needs to be clearly drawn somewhere.

I rarely read Fanfics. Because I know most of them are peices of crap which just involve the two mains characters having sex at every possible moment. And n00b Fanfics are even worse *shudders* Bad spelling and incorrect words like "fuk" and "ya" but everywhere. >_< Some people's are good. Like Alex's on here I have'nt had much of a look but from what I have it's good. But I prefer to write my own stories through my own ideas and style.

I used to read them a lot, it never used to be so hard to find a good fanfic. I mean, hell, I don't mind a lemon if it's not just something that's like, beyond a PWP, and if the author has some kind of grasp of the english language.

Seriously, you should see aff.net. all it is right now is PWPs by n00b authors who delete any review that isn't "OMG THIS IS LYK SO HAWT!!!"

This is true. People don't know how to take some criticism, it's there to help them become a better writer.

Wow, you don't even pretend to cut them any slack.  You might go a little to overboard with the firing back, in some areas though.

Then again I can't say my experience with the FFML or FF.net is much better.  It usually goes along the lines of open/search series category, lightly skim them and find that most aren't worth even a few seconds and a significant portion of the remainder you have to put up with substandard writing and a simulated universe that has only the most tenuous connections to the source material.

If they aren't trying to turn it into a fighting game with pointless and unnecessary mini-essays about how powerful and great they *cough* *cough* I mean the character is, it's something sexual, and all to often both with certain fan bases despite such actually going against the spirit of the original source material.

For the record most of my experiments in writing are crossovers, and I never go so far as to finalize anyone ever being with someone else.  In many ways I think they can be more legit as you can take the two deep fuse (basically weld the two universe together to best effect, and recompile the characters in the new universe for best fit (my trick, my definition)) them and now you have a legit new story to operate with.  Unless the universe is literally setup for it, there's a significant tendency to use author's caveat to repeatedtly club characters, setting, plot ecetra to divert into another story path.  Admittedly some of the best fics I've seen have done so, but you have to ask why they used that series when there's more appropriate ones available for their story or just went to plain Original Fiction seems as how they're basically using OCs with the name tags from the series they claim to be writing about.
