Chapter 1
Hikaru sat underneath the cherry blossom tree that was swaying gently in the breeze sending small petals softly to the floor. She sighed heavily out of frustration. She had reached a point on her short life when everything seemed boring. The big things didn’t seem big anymore and the little things were so unimportant and uninteresting they almost weren’t there.
She gazed at her fellow school mates running around and messing about. She watched how they over-reacted to things such as who was going out with whom. As much as Hikaru loved her friends the excitement she wanted or craved simply wasn’t what her friends were offering.
Hikaru sighed again and picked up a small cherry blossom flower that had fallen off the tree. For a short while Hikaru dismissed the thought that it might even be a Cherry Blossom. It was such a dark red it was unbelievable. Slowly as Hikaru stared intently at the red flower the colour got even darker soon turning blood red and then getting into a mysterious darker red and until eventually it reached blackness.
“Hikaru-chan…” A girl’s voice said softly echoing in her head. Hikaru tried to sit up to see if anyone was speaking to her but she found she had suddenly gone very sleepy. Her eyelids grew heavy and started to close.
“That’s it Hikaru-chan fall asleep. Go to sleep Hikaru. Go to sleep.” The voice beckoned inside her mind. Hikaru tried to shaker her head but she was too tired.
“Go to sleep.” The voice said tauntingly. A quiet laughter vibrated in Hikaru’s mind. “Once you’re asleep the others will follow you like ducks to water. Go on Hikaru-chan fall asleep now.”
“No…” Hikaru muttered. Her eyes shut and Hikaru found herself surrounded by darkness. “I can’t sleep not now.” Hikaru muttered.
“But you must Hikaru-chan.” The voice said tauntingly. A young woman appeared in front of her. She wore a long black Kimono with a red sash and bow and lots of tiny red flowers sewn on. Her hair was a long dark plum colour and her eyes were a shattering sapphire blue yet seemed to have a cruel streak in them. She held a staff in one hand that looked like a mirror in the shape of a pentagram surrounded by jewels such as rubies and amethysts. On each points of the pentagram was a piece of transparent blue crystal that was linked to the next point. The mirror was placed on a long golden staff that was covered in black ribbon. The woman smiled.
“Sleep Hikaru-chan. Why can’t you sleep? Rest your eyes and your spirit. Give into the tiredness. Don’t be afraid of the darkness. Don’t run away.” She said stepping forward. Hikaru stepped back and found that her foot was sinking into the darkness beneath her. It felt like a thick gooey liquid that was slowly devouring her. The woman smiled and waved her free hand out in front of her. Instantly the darkness leaped out at Hikaru like tentacles and grabbed her wrists and her waist pulling her in even faster. Then the darkness started to spread up her arms and up her body until everything but her head was covered.
“What’s going on?” Hikaru asked. Her voice was faint and whispery. She was running out of breath. She couldn’t breathe. She tried to struggle free but the darkness gripped her tighter.
“Sleep Hikaru and it won’t hurt. Sleep. Don’t fight what you know you want really.” The woman said more tauntingly. Hikaru tried to scream but her voice got stuck in her throat.
“HIKARU-CHAN!” A third voice shouted. Hikaru looked above her and a small hole of light appeared. The woman grumbled something and watched as the light grew bigger. The voice called Hikaru several more times and soon Hikaru felt as if someone was nudging her arm.
“Wake up Hikaru-chan!” The voice said irritably. Hikaru looked back at the woman dressed in black and found that instead of the tall woman she saw a girl about as old as her standing in a typical Japanese school uniform. She too had purple hair which was shoulder length and not as long. Her eyes were still the sapphire blue but softer and less menacing. Instead the girl seemed sadder than the other woman. Her stance was relaxed and weak. Her eyes seemed to express great sadness rather than a streak of cruelty.
Hikaru tried to hold her hand out to the girl but she shook her head and backed away as if she was scared.
“Don’t be afraid.” Hikaru said. The girl shook her head frantically and then glanced up at the bright light that was surrounding them.
“Hikaru-chan,” The voice said impatiently. “Will you wake up already? Hikaru-chan.”
The girl looked back at Hikaru and as the light surrounded her she faded away and instead was replaced by the tall school building and frantic junior high school students as they ran around on the school field.
Hikaru looked next to her and found the English transfer student, Ami (which was actually spelt Amy but she wanted ever so desperately to go Japanese), standing next to her and smiling.
“Wakey wakey Hikaru-chan.” Ami said cheerfully. Hikaru stared at Ami blankly for a few seconds and then smiled.
“Sorry Ami-chan. I must have dozed off.”
“Tell me about it. You’re a deep sleeper. What were you dreaming about?” Ami asked sitting next to Hikaru. “You were mumbling things about not going to sleep but I think you were a little late with that remark don’t you?” Ami asked. Hikaru nodded. She felt a little lost for words which was unlike Hikaru so Ami quickly picked up the signs that something was wrong.
“What’s wrong Hikaru?” Ami asked. Hikaru looked away and found that her right fist was clenched tightly. She opened her palm and out fell shards of a black flower. Ami leaned over and watched as the dark flower turned to what seemed to be goo and melted like tar in the hot sun leaving behind a thick black mess – pretty much like tar.
“I was holding that stuff?” Hikaru asked as she stared at her half gooed hand. Ami nodded.
“You must have it’s all over your palm. What type of flower does that?” Ami asked. Hikaru didn’t answer. She had stood up and was wiping her hand frantically on the tree trying to get the thick goo off but it looked as if it had found a home on her hand.
“Aaaaahhhhh!” Hikaru cried. “It won’t come off.” She shouted scratching at her hand. Ami smiled as Hikaru ran around trying to get it off with any little thing she got her hands onto; sticks, stones, a leaf and even a small snails shell. Ami stood up and laughed slightly as a mass of students watched Hikaru’s childish antics. Ami needed to come up with something before people started filming Hikaru.
“How about some soap and water?” Ami asked. “It works for me.” Hikaru stopped in her tracks and looked over at Ami. She smiled.
“THAT’S AGREAT IDEA!” She yelled. She ran over to Ami and hugged her and then looked past her at the crowd of disturbed junior high students. Hikaru smiled and waved as if it was nothing.
“Save me.” Ami muttered as the crowd dispersed and as Hikaru dragged her to the toilets. She washed her hands with a bit too much soap so her hands ended up as giant balls of bubbles fizzing even more as she rubbed her hands together. Eventually after covering the whole floor with soap bubbles Hikaru washed the soap off the revealed clean shiny hands and a black gooey sink that was slowly returning to the normal white colour it started off as.
