Cardcaptor Sakura
is a wonderfully cute and adorable anime
series, and that isn't just the appearance of the animation artwork. Yes,
the character designs are adorable, but Cardcaptor Sakura is a
show, more than anything else, about the everyday life of a fifth grade
girl called Sakura Kinomoto. Much screen time is devoted to Sakura doing
normal things that the rest of us do like eating breakfast, then packing
lunches before school, even brushing her teeth. Normally these things go
unnoticed in any TV show, but not here. CCS presents itself with a warm,
homey kind of atmosphere and after watching a number of episodes you'll
feel just like you're part of Sakura's family. Of course we cannot forget
about the Clow Cards and Sakura's mission to capture them all. The whole
magical realm that Sakura becomes drawn into seems to be very unreal and
at odds with her school and home life. But wouldn't any normal person feel
the same way? The situations that Sakura finds herself in are so
wonderfully easy to identify with. Add to that the quirky romantic
relationships that CLAMP is famous for, and you wind up with one of the
best anime series ever made. It needs to be pointed out though that CCS
was brought to America under the title Cardcaptors, and was
significantly altered from its original form and content. While I'll
refrain from making any critical comments about that here, I will assert
that Cardcaptors and the original Cardcaptor Sakura must be
treated as completely separate anime series.
