I have, perhaps for the last week been trying to upload a new avatar, but it just hasn't been working.

If I upload it using the upload function, the avatar preview (from the Control Panel avatar menu) first gives "Uploaded File" and then the size. If I link an image, the preview just gives "Off-site file" and then the size. In both cases, no image shows up.

This is also true when I actually go to posts of mine. The signature has been properly linked, but the avatar still doesn't show up.

What is going on?
