Hey y'all.
Um...not sure if many here are familiar with this title, dakedo...I remember first watching the movie (not the play) & thought it was all right. However...Shiro-kun told me once when I was at his place, that comparing this to the play, the original play sounded way better & that some parts from the movie were spoken, not sung.
In terms of the best song that I like from that one is this one particular song called "All I Ask of You", which I watched & heard Shiro-kun play on his piano & I thought, "Wow...totemo sugoi". That's probably one of my favorites.

There was an older version of the Phantom of the Opera (don't know the year, but it was black and white) that I saw many years ago and I thought that it was a really good story.

And a true opera is all sung like you say Yuki-san, there are no plain spoken parts.

Ah.. I know this quite well ^^; When I was younger, my mom and dad both loved listening to Phantom of the Opera tapes while on vacations. None-stop Phantom of the Opera music for 6 hours XD
Hmm anyway, I saw the newer movie... was kinda blah. I wasn't fond of the voice chosen for the Phantom though :x (Which really should be the most carefully chosen voice in the entire thing >.< ) So yeah.. I only watched that movie once, since I always cringed when listening to him ^^;
Favourite songs were (not from the movie, from the old tapes >>b): Angel of Music and The Point of No Return.

Yes. It's a really good story.
As for the lyrics to the song All I Ask of You...you're pretty close Ayumi-san.
I can only remember the first part of the song though.
"No more talk of darkness
Forget these wide-eyed fears
I'm here, nothing can harm you
My words will warm & calm you"
"Let me be your freedom
Let daylight dry your tears, I'm here
With you, beside you
To guard you & to guide you..."

...Gerard Butler was a bad choice to play a major character. Ugh. "Sing once again with me, our streenge duet." That's right, "Streenge." His voice sounded really weird, and at more than one occasion, he sounded like a machine making high pitched noises. Just terrible.
I taught myself "All I Ask Of You" for a reason that will remain undisclosed, but it's something my friends like to listen to when I'm playing the piano...
Yuzuki-chan, I'm pretty much listening to it every day, or at least listening to me play the songs...so I'm currently learning "The Phantom of the Opera," "The Music of the Night," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again," and "The Point of No Return," and...yeah. XD

this is all of it
RAOUL
No more talk
of darkness,
Forget these
wide-eyed fears.
I'm here,
nothing can harm you -
my words will
warm and calm you.
Let me be
your freedom,
let daylight
dry -your tears.
I'm here,
with you, beside you,
to guard you
and to guide you . . .
CHRISTINE
Say you love me
every
waking moment,
turn my head
with talk of summertime . . .
Say you need me
with you,
now and always . . .
promise me that all
you say is true -
that's all I ask
of you . . .
RAOUL
Let me be
your shelter,
let me
be your light.
You're safe:
No-one will find you
your fears are
far behind you . . .
CHRISTINE
All I want
is freedom,
a world with
no more night . . .
and you
always beside me
to hold me
and to hide me . . .
RAOUL
Then say you'll share with
me one
love, one lifetime . . .
Iet me lead you
from your solitude . . .
Say you need me
with you
here, beside you . . .
anywhere you go,
let me go too -
Christine,
that's all I ask
of you . . .
CHRISTINE
Say you'll share with
me one
love, one lifetime . . .
say the word
and I will follow you . . .
BOTH
Share each day with
me, each
night, each morning . . .
CHRISTINE
Say you love me . . .
RAOUL
You know I do . . .
BOTH
Love me -
that's all I ask
of you . . .
(They kiss)
Anywhere you go
let me go too . . .
Love me -
that's all I ask
of you . .
(CHRISTINE starts from her reverie)
CHRISTINE
I must go -
they'll wonder where I am . . .
wait for me, Raoul!
RAOUL
Christine, I love you!
CHRISTINE;
Order your fine horses!
Be with them at the door!
RAOUL
And soon you'll be beside me!
CHRISTINE
You'll guard me, and you'll guide me . . .
(They hurry off. The PHANTOM emerges from
behind the statue
