...when next you, Yuki-san, see this, I found out my problem with your problem...I mixed up lengths while we were talking (and I think you did too), but I found the exact same problem on a website (along with the 16=3, 36=5 problem), and did it...

"A, B, C, and D are points on a line. D is the midpoint of BC. The lengths of AB, AC, and BC are 10, 2, and 12, respectively. What's AD? 2, 4, 6, 10, 12"

Of course, you'll automatically assume that A is the beginning of the line, and that C is the end of the line. After many thorough readings, you'll find out that the order is in fact BDAC, in this manner.

Given that D is the midpoint of BC, which is 12, you find out that the distances from B to D and from C to D are both 6. This thus gives you the opportunity to find AD. Since AC is 2, simply subtract it from 6 to get 4. Thus AD is 4. This is because DA + AC = DC

The problem on the phone is that I heard that AC is 12, and that BC is 2. So the diagram looks like this.

Since D is the midpoint of BC, the distance between BC or CD are equal, and 1. AB + BD = 10+1 = 11. And that's not an answer. Looks like one has to be really careful to read the problem properly! XDD
