The first time I watched MKR, I didn't really get a good grasp of what they were talking about concerning the Legend of the Magic Knights. It wasn't clear until the end of the first season what the tragedy of that legend really was. When I watched the series the second time, everything became crystal clear. Clef never told them the true nature of what their mission was. The villagers feared and ran away from them. Others, like Ascot, Caldina, and Lafarga, made peace with them, but left them behind and didn't look back. Only Ferio became friends with them and helped out with their mission. And there's much more too, but the end result is that no one, not even Ferio, ever told Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, exactly what was going on until it was already too late. If they had known beforehand what the mission of the Magic Knights was, would the three of them have followed through with it?

They didnt have a choice anyway.. They HAD to.. or else Cephiro would fall to Zagato and they would never go back home... Its true though, its never mentioned what their true mission is... I was reading the manga and the end was a real jaw-dropper...

Yes, that's the way Clef had presented it to them, that they could never go home to Tokyo if they didn't complete their mission. However, the true nature of their mission wasn't revealed to them. Umi even suspected Clef of deception right away in the first episode. So their decision was based on incomplete information. If Clef had told them the truth at the beginning, that they would have to kill someone to complete their mission, they might have refused because I believe that their ethical integrity would've gotten in the way, even if it meant that they could never go home.

I'm just jumping into the discussion here because I've wonder myself. I don't think they would have done it or else why had Clef deceived them? He must have known that if he had told them the truth, they probably would have refused to carry-out their "mission" and Cephiro would have been in great trouble. What I don't understand is why Zagato sorta turned evil. Yes, he wanted to stop the magic Knights, but he used violent methods and he was using people (at least in the manga version). Why not go ahead himself and tell them the truth?

That's a good point. Zagato had a couple of opportunities in the anime and the manga to just explain himself, and put everything to rest but he didn't. Even those that were working for him didn't know the true nature of his intentions.
What comes to mind is a statement made by Clef right after Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu left him after their initial introduction. He said "The true enemy of the Magic Knights is infinitely more powerful." A reference to Princess Emeraude of course. So it is conceivable that Zagato never really was an enemy of the Magic Knights and never intended to destroy them in the first place. Zagato was aware of Emeraude's wish to die and he knew what had to happen in order for that end to come about. When Zagato saw the three girls from another world for the first time, he called them "Eggs that just hatched". So his impression of them is that they were helpless children with no hope of success in granting Princess Emeraude's wish. So is it possible that that was really his motive? To grant her wish? If so, the conflict between him and the Magic Knights wasn't a war at all. It merely served to train them and increase their strength and power to the point where they would be able carry out the wish of his beloved Emeraude. Too bad that kinda backfired on the Magic Knights though.. what with the whole Evil Emaraude thing... I only wish i could finish downloading all the eppies... im only on about 5 or something..
 and the manga for the second series is expensive too.... *sigh*

The manga isn't terribly expensive. The second series is less than 30 dollars at The Anime Corner Store You could also look on ebay if you don't mind getting bootlegs.
