Actually, I just wanted to give this great shoujo series a bit of a plug, but since I'm time-impaired, I'll just mention it here.
It's the ultimate in feel-good anime, and completely devoid of romance! Unless you count Yukari and Nyamo and those guys who didn't like them. XD. I think the series actually has something of a universal appeal, because it's so great just for a laugh. Seriousness is kept to an absolute minimum and I can only remember three serious moments in the last series... and even the most seirous of all was corrupted by Yomi decking Tomo for the second time. XD
The characters are so great! They're very original creations, with Yomi and Kagura being particularly lifelike. You could meet someone just like them out on the street. The same with Nyamo.
And Chiyo-chan is too cute! So is Kagura in her own way, as is Sakaki. And you gotta love Chiyo-chan's dad.

The impression that I got from Azumanga Daioh is that it's like an anime version of Seinfeld because it seems to be based on the same principle - a show about nothing. ^_^;; There isn't a central plotline like most anime series have and the only real theme seems to be following a group of friends through three years of high school. In Japan high school is only three years (10-12 grade). Each anime episode consists of a couple of scenes or skits concerning a specific event. The skit plays out and we just go on to the next one. The really wonderful thing that this does is make Azumanga Daioh one of the best character based anime shows I've ever seen. ^__^ Like you say Emily-chan, the characters are very lifelike and easy to relate to. They each have their own strengths and weakness, their own courage and fears, and are all unique. Many of the things that they do I can easily understand because at one time or another I've done most of them myself including a lot of Osaka's ditzy observations, but I'm pretty airheaded too. :P

Waaaaaaiiii! I love this show!
I bought the first volume (5 eps) a few weeks back on a whim, and it was well worth it!
As MJ said, it really is based on nothing, just a feel good show! The title means essentially nothing too... ^__^
I want the rest of them now though, I'm suffering from withdrawal symptoms... >_<

Teeheehee, Sheepies has become a victim of Azu-cutness and fun!! Wheeeeeeee!! I'm reading Vol 4 of the manga right now, and I can't get enough of it either. ^_^ The name actually does mean something. The author is Kiyohiko Azuma, so the Azumanga comes from her name and manga(comic). The Daioh part comes from the the comic being run in a daily newspaper, so the name essentially means "Azuma's Daily Comic" ^_^

*Backs away from H-chan nervously.*

I've never seen the English dubbed version of Azumanga Daioh, so I've always wondered if it was any good. But if you guys say it's okay ... well I always need more anime! :P

I checked two of the DVDs out at my library. It's a good anime. Hella funny. Chiyo-chan is the cutest! lol

They use the word cute too much though. Oh and the dub sucks; I listened to the japanese with subtitles instead.

I got the dub by accident first time round, and I couldn't stand it... The cuteness was somehow lost...

Who was I renamed as again? o_O

Actually, I've lately had some really scary Yomi-Tomo moments. Like when my friend gets totally hypo off iced coffee and starts acting like Tomo. And I pull a Yomi unconsciously.
I borrow the series off David (he got his boxset from Malaysia/Indonesia - I can't quite tell, I think its Malaysian because thet speak some weird Indoesque language, but then again it could be Indo with words I don't know) and have it all stored on my hardrive. but I also have volumes 1-4 (episodes 1-18 or so) of the official Aussie release.
The dub is a bit, well, "Cooking is so fun, cooking is so fun! Now why don't we take a break and see what we have done?".
Sakaki was pulled off pricelessly well, though, except in the singing department. Christine Auten suffers a lot because we compare her to Asakawa Yuu, who absolutely pwns everybody (and by everybody I include Puffy AmiYumi, pwnalicous as they are).
Ha, remember how Yomi tried to sing karaokae? XD! I wish she had an image song of the same quality. But Sorezone no ONE WAY is cool.

I have a bunch of songs with Chiyo singing in it. How does she keep that high voice for such a long time... skillz...

Ha! I love that seris. I've never seen the anime actually,  :tantrum: but I adore the manga. Osaka is my favorite, closely followed by Sakaki ("It must have been in a bad mood?").

Kaorin has the most wonderful moments throughtout the third beach house episode... I pity her, having to get into the Yukari-mobile to stay with Sakaki. Let me quote her.
"I didn't know carsickness could be so bad!" (Sakaki in a swimsuit.)
"I didn't know early mornings could be so beautiful!" (Sakaki doing early-morning exercises)

That part was very funny. Kaorin iscool. It was funny when on Sports Day she got to dance with Sakaki and the look she had on her face.

The Yukari-mobile... poor Chiyo-chan, she was traumatized for life after that.

Hehe, I'm reading volume 1 for the second time this week XD

Poor CHiyo-chan...

Tomo: "So what's worse, lightening or cars?"

Chiyo-chan: ...Waaaaaaaaaaah! ;-;

Yomi (i think that's her name, the girl with glasses...she's the only name I can't remember!): You leave Chiyo-chan alone! >.<
